Let’s Play Tennis

Denver-based duo Tennis arrive packing good vibrations straight from high-seas heaven.

Yup, that’s Alaina Moore posing in an off-the-shoulder lace bodysuit on the cover of Tennis’ debut album. The petite lead singer joined her partner in crime, Patrick Riley, in a sold-out Toronto performance this past Friday. The adoring crowd may have expected good vibes from a surfy pop group…but who could have predicted they’d be so goddamn cute?

Anyone who is given this label past the age of 10, however, knows it can be both a compliment and a curse. Introducing a new song, Moore says: “Patrick has a very real fear that people will think our band is too cute…so instead of telling you the real story behind this song, I’m just going to say it’s about drugs.”

The band’s 2010 release Cape Dory is a sunny ocean-lover’s dream that recounts a special relationship that blossomed between the couple during their months together at sea. One track in particular entitled “South Carolina” tells the story of a three-day storm encountered during their travels that Moore says, “We got to know very well.”

Their bubbly beats and wanderlust theme is reminiscent of the Beach Boys’ Holland and a timeless escape to the simple life. It’s water, it’s waves, it’s devotion and it’s sure to be the new soundtrack to your summer.

Frostbite Fashion

We’ve all seen the long line of scantily clad ladies outside a hot club. Heck, most of us have stood in it. But when temperatures dip below freezing, bare legs and spaghetti straps become less sexy and more impractical with each dropping degree.

Long john layers, sweater shorts, and wool tights are a few of my favourite pieces this season that can cozy up a winter wardrobe.

For a truly alluring look, opt for romantic layers and form-fitting pieces over exposed skin. And Remember: your buns are cute! Don’t freeze them off.

Snow Bunny beauty tip:

Keep the rest of your makeup simple and smudge a rosy cream blush on the apples of your cheeks.

Blast from the Past

Looking back as Sony retires its Walkman

cassette-player after 30 years.

The making of my early mixtapes consisted of two boomboxes facing towards one another. I’d have a favourite station queued up on one and frantically dash across the room to hit record on the other the instant a good tune came on the radio.

That game changed considerably the day my dad took me to Canadian Tire to pick out my very first Sony walkman. I chose the brightest model from behind the glass showcase and from that day forward could listen to any mixtape I wanted, whenever I wanted, wherever I wanted—and usually did.

When a tape was full I’d position myself in the centre of my bed, headphones in place, and hum along to the haphazard mix of songs until mum inevitably showed up to warn me: “TURN IT DOWN before you burst your eardrums”. I would of course, just until her footsteps began to fade down the hall….then I’d slowwwly turn it back up.

R.I.P Sony Walkman.

Summer Concert Style

5 ways to rock out and look fabulous

  1. Be cool. When suiting up for an outdoor show opt for light fabrics and don’t be afraid to show some skin: cut-off shorts, rompers, and sundresses will keep you cool when temperatures are high.
  2. Accessorize. Concerts are a great venue to showcase unique jewelry or headpieces…and sunglasses are a must! Pick one or two main focal points and balance them out with basic clothing—too much of everything is, well, just too much of everything.
  3. Experiment—with fashion. For goodness sake, stay away from the psychedelics but don’t be afraid to expand your style horizons. Glam up ordinary makeup with face paint or rock  some mismatched draping earrings.
  4. Stay grounded. Stick to flat sandals or comfy boots. By the last act you want to be cheering for an encore, not praying the show will be over so you can tend to your achy feet.
  5. Invoke the past. Incorporate subtle floral emblems or feathers into your look for a laidback summer style that’s timeless.

Scantily Clad

The season’s fashion-forward get racy and lacy

Have you ever bought a beautiful piece of lingerie and thought it almost a shame to cover up? Well, this season you may not have to. We love lingerie for its delicate and feminine quality. For all these reasons, more and more designers are taking so-called unmentionables out of the boudoir and onto the runway.

While lacy slip-inspired skirts and tank-tops have been popular for years now, this season’s hot new trend comes in the form of sheer lace tops layered over matching bras.

This style is best suited for small to mid-busted gals, and if carried out properly should come across more sophisticated than sexy. The key to pulling off this look is choosing a well-fitting bra or tube top that provides extremely good-coverage. For the more modest, a nude tank top may be substituted to convey an equally—if not more—sexy effect. Meeeeow.

Lavender Crush

Pastel locks that are making waves in a big way.

It pains me to say my favourite new trend in hair is FOR BLONDES ONLY!

Pale lavender, blue and red pastels over silvery blonde locks have shown up on the Spring/Summer 2010 runway of Proenza Schouler and on the heads of fashion-forward ladies from Ashley Olsen to Lady GaGa. Nylon magazine recently dubbed these wispy rainbow streaks the ‘My Little Pony” look, and who doesn’t love my little pony?

*sigh*

Oh well, at least I’ll have something to look forward to when my hair turns grey.
